Re: Crossbows

The advantage of a crossbow while traveling would be stopping power and quick use. You can keep a crossbow loaded and ready, fire it at a moment's notice, and hit with more raw power than even the heaviest bow in the strongest hands could, depending on the crossbow's size. It'd be slower, but it'd b...

Re: Religion

Without a doubt, the lack of religious trappings - such as churches, priests, rituals - is one of the most positive aspects of the story for me. The limited (restricted?) vision of Middle-earth using merely the texts of Hobbit and LOTR has no need for this perennial aspect of our own world. The app...

Re: Crossbows

I use crossbows and plated mail in my game. I think they fit fine. The way I balanced crossbows in particular was giving them slightly higher damage and Injury values, +3 Pierce instead of +2, but they need reloaded as an action after each shot.

Re: The Lord Of The Rings

I feel like it's one of, if not the best fantasy novel, but it's definitely not perfect and it has a lot of oddities and strange design choices. As someone else mentioned, it isn't ever really explained why Frodo, knowing that the Ring is dangerous and Gandalf wanting it destroyed, stays in the Shi...

Re: Combat Tasks, are they worth it?

They can be pretty situationally powerful, but they're too niche to use all the time I feel. Some Virtues do let you use combat tasks as a secondary action though, which makes them significantly better. I imagine that's how they were balanced, because if they were made stronger they'd probably be ov...

Movement in Combat

I like using maps for pretty much any game I run, and TOR's no exception. I like the combat as it is, but I've been trying to think of ways to set up some kind of movement system for it. Not necessarily super tactical, but something like combat zones from something like Fate, Shadow of the Demon Lor...

Re: Adversary skill tests

I forget exactly how I did it, but I improvised a system of Adversary skill checks in my game. I think it'd be nice to see official optional rules for them in the future. There're just some situations where you need to have NPCs do their own thing.

Re: The Lord of the Rings (5E) Early Access Feedback

I was surprised to see the class level cap at 10. This feels too low. I've spent most of my time in D&D campaigns in the level 11-15 range and I'm sure there are many who would like to run higher level adventures. Is it possible to have the classes expanded before it goes to print or get a supp...

Re: Selling Magical items

the easiest way to avoid the issue is, telling the players that they wouldn't get anything practical or noteworthy out of selling (mechanically and in world) as there is barely an economy in TOR other than a credit rating (aka standard of living) and that other than raising that, there wouldn't be ...
