Re: Never knew TOR 1E

I'm mixed on this concept. I agree that a D&D or Pathfinder inspired system feels very out of place in middle earth, and is too crunchy and interrupts the narrative too much. The counterbalance is that I "also" don't want a system that is "so" stripped down, that mechanics become nearly irrelevant a...

Re: 2ed Playtest Report - Of Herbs and Stewed Hobbit

What is this stewed Hobbit business? Is there a 2nd edition adventure released somewhere?

Re: Not a lot of opening volleys? Ranged vs Melee?

Yeah, I get that... there is a lot of GM fudge factor involved when the rules aren't all that clear. I was just pointing out that the rules "aren't" all that clear. Not much clarity on ranged vs melee attacks for adversaries as well as whether a shield is present or not. That sounds like something t...

Not a lot of opening volleys? Ranged vs Melee?

In playtesting combat, I've noticed that it's pretty rare for combatants to actually make ranged attacks. This is due to both the fact that a lot of the adversaries as printed do not "appear" to have ranged attacks? (There is some ambiguity. Does an orc soldier with a spear have only 1 spear, is it ...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

IIRC it seems most Shire Folk and Breelanders don't know the connection between the Rangers and the Kings of Old. Appendix A of the LotR makes it IMO quite clear that the Dúnedain deliberately went into hiding in order to survive by existing incognito and re-emerge later (i.e. in Aragorn's time). I...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

Remember your history of Eriador! The goblin wars of 2740-2747 (only about 200 years in the past) wiped out almost the entire population of Eriador. If it hadn’t have been for The War of the Dwarves and Orcs in 2793, Eriador would likely have been overrun. So the people of Eriador have only had abo...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

That's coming from the 1st edition adventure supplement covering Eriador, Ruins of the North I think? Nothing canon, just precedent in game. There is an adventure where you are arrested and thrown in a barn and have to defend your innocence to the locals (who are under Saruman's domination). . Okay...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

I have no recollection of any permanent settlements between Bree and the ruins of Tharbad, perhaps this was a more temporary encampment of some sort? I can certainly imagine that a town or at least a way station once stood at the intersection where the road to Sarn Ford branches from the North-Sout...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

Hmmm. I"m not sure about the ancestry of the Lossoth (the Snowmen of Forochel). They might represent a strain of the Northmen; for my own purposes I have imagined them as being the ancestors of the Sami people of Scandinavia. The folklore of the Bree-landers attempts to link the founding of Bree wi...
