Re: TNs for starting character

Finally got round to my playtest last night, having planned a month ago. We played The Marsh Bell, almost literally translated using 2e rules, using the 1e pregens again translated across. The TNs weren't as jarring as I expected, and being able to award extra dice flowed nicely, but the higher TNs ...

Re: Clarity requested on REARWARD STANCE

It would be 2 close range per rearward by default, however the other thing I haven't seen mentioned (albeit only skim reading) is that the set up/location of the fight can also change this. If you are fighting on a narrow pass for example, one or two close range fighters could block for any number o...

Re: TNs for starting character

I think the highest TN I ever set was when they wanted to do something New Line Cinema outrageous like jump on the dragon’s back, and I told them it would be near miraculous if the player succeeded (which he did, btw) and it was ~TN 24 if I recall. In a case like that I would just give them the TN ...

Re: TNs for starting character

I also think the new TN system makes it harder to suspend disbelief because by preventing the Loremaster from employing secrecy for success threshold, it can potentially limit my choices. I cannot grant leniency without shattering the illusion that the player succeeded on their own; I cannot make t...

Re: TNs for starting character

I play the Fantasy Flight Games RPGs, mainly the Warhammer 3e. In WFRP 3e as is in Genesys/StarWars difficulty and drawbacks, as advantages, and skill levels all add dice to the pool, so this change in TOR is very familiar to me. Removing dice and adding dice becomes very second nature, and feels m...

Re: TNs for starting character

Please try reading the whole conversation before being outright dismissive. I'm sorry if I sounded dismissive, but what you wrote was factually wrong. 1) I’ve very easily provided a situation where climbing a wall would require a roll. 2) maybe they only want to get to a ledge on the gate. 3) the c...

Re: TNs for starting character

Yes, but what did you expect from rolling a Skill with only 1 rank? If I'm a total novice but by spending Hope I could accomplish what a much more experienced character can do, than what's the point of getting better at things and not simply stacking as much Hope as possible? The difference here to...

Re: TNs for starting character

Climbing the walls of a castle should be more difficult, due to being more flat and slippery, therefore granting -2dice, or -1. There is already a rule for making testes more difficult without changing the TN, why don't use? That works great with making something harder (even if it is actually maki...

Re: Live stream by Francesco!

Very informative and some really good insights. I’m very grateful that they take the time to interact directly.

Bit of a shame that they only took 3 or 4 questions, but they did cover some of the top threads, and there’s always next time to cover more.

Re: TNs for starting character

The difference here to other systems is that climbing over the garden wall and scaling the black gate will be the exact same target number. Francesco has said that the number is balanced for campaign play, which is fine, but in almost any other game, as you get better at something you take on more ...
