Mithril weapons as Brawling weapons

Question about the a Moria supplement, I'm hoping for some input from the writers (etc):
Additionally, a 1-handed weapon made of Mithril can be used to make Brawling attacks. (p184, Moria: Through the Doors of Durin (Alpha))
This has been interpreted as meaning that you can use them to make Brawling attacks at any time - so even if you're not proficient in, say, swords (you chose bows and spears instead, with three and one ranks respectively), you can make a brawling attack with the Mithril sword with 2d.

Is this correct? It feels like that's quite powerful and possibly not what was intended (my original interpretation was that it was so you could use them while Seized). What are the constraints intended for this property?

It is indeed the correct interpretation. A Mithril weapon can also be used while Seized, at the cost of losing (1d) since it's a Brawling attack.

That's good. Thanks for clarifying.

One thing on this same topic. Page 48 of the CRB shows a table listing brawling as a combat proficiency and applying that to the brawling weapons. Whilst the table defines brawling as a combat proficiency, officially there are only 4 combat proficiencies in the game (as highlighted on page 65).

It would be good to know: if the mithril sword can make brawling attacks at any time, do we reduce the load of the sword by 1 or by the brawling rank? I'd go with the former and reduce it by 1 (as brawling is not a proficiency despite the table categorisation) but would be good to get your input if possible.

Brawling does not have "ranks", since it's not a Combat Proficiency (as shown on page 65, there are only 4: Axes, Bows, Spears and Swords): in fact, there are only Brawling attacks, not ranks. Some weapons on page 48 are listed with "Brawling" under Combat Proficiency only as a reminder that they don't have a corresponding Combat Proficiency, and can only be used to make Brawling attacks.
So, you always reduce the Load of the Mithril weapon by its corresponding, "real" Combat Proficiency.

Can a Mithril spear be thrown using Brawling if the character has no ranks in spear or would it use a single d12?

It can (the core rulebook specifies that it is possible to make ranged Brawling attacks, for example when throwing stones).
