The Elgor Archives - A Symbarian Adventure Retold

Tue 13 Nov 2018, 11:52

This is a retelling of the campaign that I host for my Symbaroum group. We have a slight twist to the formula and hopefully someone somewhere might derive sliver of inspiration from here.
Spoilers from the published adventures will be featured here.

The tradgedy of House Elgor

In the old days of Alberetor, one of the south most coastal duchies were governed by Elgor, a noble house closely connected to the diety Executioner. The capitol of the duchy, Holden, housed the young god's high temple, and his symbol was even featured on the family weapon. When prios was proclaimed the one true god and all others were to be cast aside, Elgor refused to abandon the executioner. Careful whispers of the Elgorian heretics could be heard both in the guarded council chambers down to the very muddy streets of the cities. Even so, it fell upon Elgor and their northern neighbor Vearra to defend this region of Alberetor in the great war.

During the final years of the war, while the Queen was still captured, a lengthy strategy from Elgor and Vearra was coming to it's final stages. The armies had purposefully led a slow retreat from the invading hordes. Perserving their own armies while cutting down as many invaders as possible in the process. Eventually baiting the dark lords into an ambush by leaving Elgor's infantry exposed, and then have Vearran cavalry ride them down in a surprise attack. However, Vearra witheld the attack, letting the undead hordes clash directly in to the Elgorian forces who had to put up a desperate fight for survival. It was not until the numbers started thinning and the death toll had climbed high that the heavy, earth shaking thumping of the cavalry could be heard. They rode in and trampled down infantry men and undead alike. Having betrayed house Elgor, Vearra remained as the only victor.

It was later declared that it was Elgor who had defected to side with the enemy and that the heroic house of Vearra had called upon the light of Prios to defeat them both. A story that the desperately zelaous people of Alberetor swallowed with few questions asked.

The duke and duchess of Elgor were both executed in Holden and most of their treasury and goods fell into the hands of Vearra as according to Alberian law. However, before the house died, a single seed was encapsulated and sent into the winds of tomorrow. A certain master Vernam of Holden's Ordo Magica chapter, arranged to smuggle out the young heiress and a selected few servants by boat and have them hidden somewhere deep in the Alberian remains.

TL;DR: House Elgor was declared heretics and betrayed by House Vearra who acquired all their wealth. The Elgorian heiress and a few of her servants were saved and hidden by Master Vernam.

The player characters

Oretra - Played by Aurora.
The daughter of the deceased duke. Having shown unusual mystical abilities right from birth, she eventually became yet another burden on Elgors bad reputation. Earning such names as The heretic child and The executioner's witch. Master Vernam of Ordo Magica took a special interest in the girl and made it his own responsibility to oversee her education. After the Vearran betrayal, she was separated from her family  still a young child. Eventually taken in by friends of Vernam and relocated to a simple farm where she spent a great many years under the guise of a simple peasant while being put through rigirous studies and education. Vernam came to stay with them from time to time and the two of them developed a close bond, until he eventually left for Ambria in order to prepare a new life for her there. But before those plans came to be, Oretra and the rest of the survivors were found by the authorities and imprisoned.

Heragan - Played by Mons.
Son of Elgor's former spymaster. Raised to one day claim the title himself, he's been trained in the arts of stealth and social manipulation since childhood. A desicion was made to asign him as Oretra's servant and protector after Elgors downfall. Lived in secrecy together with Oretra, and was finally captured together with her and Seron.

Seron - Played by Toni.
Saved from a life of banditry and recruited in to the Elgorian army as a teen. Graam, an Elgorian commander and devout follower of the executioner, decided to let the young boy reclaim his virtues by serving in the army. Having been given a purpose in life, Seron grew stronger and more skilled then the other boys his age, only being rivaled by a boy named Emian. In Seron's mind, Emian was a bully who made a following by frigthening the others, essentially undermining the Executioner's teachings.
Seron was one of the infantry men in that final battle when Vearra betrayed Elgor. There he watched as Emian assasinated commander Graam, thus leaving the Elgorian troops in further disarray. Having chased Emian across the battlefield, the two finally came to a duel on the crest of a hill while the Vearran cavalry descended below. Seron was knocked unconcious and woke up in captivity.

In the time that followed, Seron broke out of captivity with a group of surviving soldiers, and led them on a suicide mission to take revange upon their betrayers. But as he he learned of Oretra's existance, he wandered through the Alberian ashlands for several years before finding her. He was captured together with Oretra and Heragan.

Emisia - Written and played by Kari.
Emisia was forced to move away from her childhood home and relocate to Holden as a refugee of war. Her whole family had to start life anew in the slums where attaining means of survival was a constant struggle. This is when Emisia and her sister Elmendra got introduced to master Vernam, who spent part of his time educating refugee children. The sisters became deeply absorbed by the studies. When the time came for Vernam to relocate to Ambria he offered the siblings to come along. Elmendra accepted, but Emisia stayed behind to take care of their younger brother who was seriously ill with corruption and would not survive the trip.

Despite her best efforts, there was no way she could save her brother. She made the difficult desicion to end his life to spare him his missery, a deed that lives inside her still. Emisia traveled Alberetor for several years, offering her training as medicus and alchemist to those in need. Sometimes by healing but other times by taking lives of those who had succumbed to violence and banditry. In her mind, these people were akin to tumors that had to be cut off for the body to survive. Scarred from the loss of her brother, she has a personal goal to find a cure for corruption.

TL;DR: The heiress Oretra, the spy Heragan and the soldier Seron are all surviving members of house Elgor. The three of them were captured. The medicus Emisia has spent the last years traveling between the remaining villages of Alberetor offering her services.

Session 1

This was a solo adventure for the character Emisia.
Emisia has been recruited to investigate a mysterious illness afflicting workers in the iron mines of Randoria, the last Alberian mine still in operation. The session starts as she is making her way south through dead, blackened hills and valleys, toward the mines. She spots some strange human shillouettes through the thick mist that covers the area. It soon becomes apparent that she is surrounded by a horde of undead stragglers. By means of stealth and climbing, she finds immediate safety on top a cliff, but with no obvious ways to escape.

I had the player explore a map that I drew by hand. A mini-sandbox littered with objects, challenges and opportunities for creativity. The main incentive was to get out alive, but I also planted some optional temptations in exposed locations that she would have to brave in order to get to. Some time is spent sneaking around and successfully picking of stray targets with her bow. She finds a satchel containing some valuables and a signed document granting it's owner the right to enter and live in Ambria. Eventually she manages to get away from the horde by scaling down a steep mountain wall using rope.

When she reaches the mine she is told that she is to talk to the overseer who won't be back until the following day, but the guards agree to let her start examining the sick.
The rest of the day is spent investigating the multi-leveled underground mining complex. It appears that everything is not well as the workforce consists entierly of slaves. The induviduals that are suffering from this illness consists of both slaves and guards but share some common traits. They have all spent time in the deepest part of the mines, they show signs of corruption and they have all gone completely mad. In their nonsensical ramblings, they all mention someone whispering to them. The guards seem to behave more like bandits and jokingly tells her that she should behave or she might end up a slave like the rest.

Finally the time comes to attend a private meeting with the overseer, a man named Orlan of Melion, at his house. She is served wine and has to endure a good bit of bragging before being offered a deal she was not expecting. Orlan wants Emisia to simply pin the source of the illness upon a specific woman amongst the slaves. When pressed harder, he reveals that the woman is a prisoner brought to the mines by a Theurg who remains within the mining grounds still. For some reason, he seems desperate to get rid of the theurg and hopes to do so by having a medicus declaring the girl a danger to the operation. She is promised a reward that would cover the cost of setting up a new life in Ambria, but she has reasons to doubt the validity of that promise.

Afraid of being captured as a slave if she declines, she acts like she accepts the deal.

TL;DR: Emisia reaches the iron mines of Randoria and meets with it's overseer who offers her wealth if she wrongfully accuses a female slave worker of being the source of a dangerous disease. He seemingly wants this in order to get rid of the woman and the theurg who is her keeper and stays in the mines. Emisia suspect further foulness but appears to accept the deal in order to avoid enslavement.

Backstory before Session 2

Duke Akiel of Elgor's surviving daughter Oretra was captured by agents of Prios. As a form of torture, the group was put into slave labour in the Randorian mines. Often being worked to the brink of death only to be brought back by the theurg Ansel, who acted as their warden. Through means of a holy ritual, Ansel sealed Oretra's mystical abilities with an unremovable collar around her neck. This ritual had to be renewed with every full moon. Aside from the punishment in itself, the church hoped to use confessions of the broken down Elgorian survivors as a pawn in the political game for the Ambrian people's support.

In this mine there are the guards, the slaves and then a middle class. A group of slaves who have been awarded with more tolerable living conditions and the role of drivers of the other slaves. Often people who are capable of beating and intimidating others. These are called pushers. Of course, all the slaves have been made addicted to a substance very much like wild chew in order to further keep them under control.

Oretra, Heragan and Seron has during their time of enslaved captivity worked out a plan to escape through careful dealings with a guard captain who goes by the name of Halek. The deal is that Halek will at some point, close to the time when Oretra's mystical seal is at it's weakest, give the players means to escape and set free other slaves. The group will then lead a revolt of the slaves, arming them and conducting a surpise attack on the Pushers, creating a chaos that will allow for the Elgorians to escape. At the same time, Halek and his men will use this opportunity to loot the Overseer's estate on the surface and make off with the riches. This plan was made by the players themselves.

TL;DR: The Elgorian survivors are put to slave work in the mines of Randoria, watched over by the Theurg Ansel who keeps Oretra's powers sealed with a ritual that has to be continously renewed. A deal with the guard Halek has been made, the group is to start a revolt between the two classes of slaves in order to create a distracting cover for escape.
