Skill Failure

Sat 21 Apr 2018, 18:58

I'm not sure if this belongs in rules or general, but one thing I really like about MYZ was that each skill had a success and a failure blurb. For example

FORCE:

When wreckage or debris block your way and you need to push or lift something heavy, roll for Force. Use this skill for any feat of strength.

Failure: It’s just too heavy. You need tofind another way. And what if the noise youmade attracted unwanted company?

Success: With a groan, you push through and get whatever it was out of your way.

Stunts: If you roll extra/beyond the first, choose one of these stunts:
KYou push or throw the object with great force. One target of your choice within Arm’s Length su ers damage equal to the number of extra/.
KIf applicable in the situation, you find or reveal a hidden passage or object. The GM decides what it is.

p.s. Will FB have stunts?

There is quite a long Topic discussing this, and the official answer from Fria Ligan is that no, there won't be Stunts. Here's a link to Tomas's (lead designer) post explaining why:

Thanks for the heads up about stunts. I still think that FB could benefit from explicitly having failure explicitly spelled out in skill descriptions, just to avoid the "you failed to force open the door and nothing happens" problem.

Sure, there are many of us that agree with you.

Hi! The general principle of "failing forward" remains in FBL, but it's not spelled out for each skill like in MYZ. The main reason is that skill uses are more clearly defined in FBL, so general failure descriptions like in MYZ don't really serve any purpose. :)
