Re: Class Names

I know you have a few different names for the same class in the Alpha. That is to be expected. I would like to start a discussion on what they will be named in the final draft. Personally I like the idea of using more unique names for the game.

Raiders & Rogues in a cursed world. There are no heroes here.
My list looks like this.
Druid = Druid
Fighter = Warrior (Warrior is more fitting they can do more then fight. Warrior is practitioner of the art of war. Not just some fodder for the grinder. This is just personal opinion however. I spent a very long time in martial arts, and in the army. I would think of my self as a warrior but never as a fighter.)
Minstrel = Minstrel (I think this is so unique. This is one of my favorite class names.)
Peddler = Peddler (see Minstrel)
Ranger/Hunter = Hunter (Ranger reminds me to much of a hero. There are no heroes in the forbidden lands. There are raiders and rogues.)
Rider = Horse Soldier, or something else. (I just dislike the name Rider. It's very bland and not inspiring to me.  And their is this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIWINsaEpnw )
Rogue = Rogue (What can I say a cutpurse is a classic.)
Spellbinder/Sorcerer = Spellbinder (This is the main reason I wanted to get the game. The intro video The Spellbinder Zygofer. Now I want to play a spellbinder not a sorcerer.)

This is just my suggestions.
I agree with most of these, but i do like shaman instead of druid, perhaps you could include some alternative names so that a player can tailor their character?

Ins't that something every player can match with his GM? But I would find it okay if Kin specific titles are mentioned in the rules. Perhaps Wolfkin and Orcs name Druids Shaman or Wise Man/Woman? And the Rogue is for some Kins like the Half(l)ings a Scoundrel. The Minstrel is so called by Elven and Humans but Skald for Dwarves and Orcs. This will make the world a little bit richer.

Rider is an interesting case because as currently described it seems to be written specifically with the Aslene in mind (none of the other profession descriptions mention kin) - in which case  Horseman / woman / person would make sense, but I agree Rider gives more flexibility (which I think is what's intended) - if a player wants a Dwarven Rider (Hey, it might happen), would they really have a horse, or some sort of cave lizard? I'm sure there will be a longer list of mounts in the gear section. Hopefully, we'll see the text in the starting equipment changed to 'mount' or similar.

I agree with Kull's point about discussion with the GM though - fundamentally generic 'class' names are fine for players, for organising the books and defining talent 'trees'. What's really important is how the player chooses to present his character to the world - if he wants to describe himself as a Hunter, a Scout or a Shaman, then that's fine by me.

Without favouring one over the other I just want to point out a dilemma visible in Fragpuss´and King Kulls latest comments (and earlier):
Do we want rules and names to be as open to player preferences and styles as possible OR strengthen the specific setting and flavour? I suspect we often can't have both (although any party of course can adapt and change freely).

OK, I will favour staying with the setting where we have to choose, but then I'm biased. What are your thoughts on this?

I would say setting comes first.

I'd be very happy with setting-related profession titles and kin-specific variants defined in the world description for flavour. So Horse-<add artificial non gender-specific contruct here> :P should be a sub-variant of 'Rider'. What's important is that the top level name and the core concept be clear. 'Ranger' is fine - everyone knows what a Ranger is, below that, Wolfkin may have 'Stalkers' and Elves might have 'Guardians', whether characters in the world choose to refer to themselves constantly in those terms is another matter.

That might be a good idea since FL wants the rules to be applicable to other settings as well. They'll decide of course
(I'm a contractor remember although I wrote the setting and most of the adventures. Incidently I sent FL a first draft of the final adventure of the campaign Ravens Purge during the weekend.)

Setting obviously. It was only an idea to make some variants for the Kins because I think that would underscore the background of the world. And apart from that I think that a player can name his class as he wishes as long as the GM gives his ok. The only thing that I wish it will be in the rules is spellbinder and not sorcerer ;)
