Re: Dice

Mon 12 Feb 2018, 10:10

A thought occurred to me about the dice this morning. As currently constituted the dice set might work for starting characters, but with it being possible for characters to have a stat value of 6 depending on kin and profession and a large number of talents that (please, please FL for the love of all that is holy change this!) add extra dice to the skill pool, it's rapidly going to be shown up as inadequate. If you've got a skill of 5, but only 3 dice then you need to roll 2 of them twice, remembering what you rolled on the first 3 in case you need to push. Sure you can pad it out with other dice, but it slightly defeats the object of having cool bespoke dice for the game.

I've ordered 2 sets anyway and I was going to buy a bunch of blank dice and a metallic marker to make a couple of player sets, but even a second set doesn't fully solve the problem - you'd have 8 base dice (more than you'd ever need according to RAW) and only 6 skill dice (fewer than the possible maximum you'd need - skill 5 + tier 3 talent).

Wouldn't it make more sense to swap the base and skill dice? i.e. have 4 skill dice and 3 base dice per set? You'd still need 2 sets, but it would at least cover pretty much every eventuality (unless the GM starts handing out situational skill bonuses).

Thoughts?
I agree, that would be a good solution.

No app! Dice, I want real dice :)
Some people can't afford the special dice, and with MYZ, they were out of stock worldwide with the specialty dice for a long time (nearly a year), so the app was the it option for many. Plus the app for MYZ is really well done.

The idea behind the 4/3/2 distribution is that a starting character can only have skill levels up to 3, while attribute scores can be higher. Also, having multiple sets and thus 8 or even 12 base dice is useful for some monsters.

Thanks for the explanation Tomas, but if a starting character has, e.g. The Axe Fighter and Dragonslayer talents, wouldn't they be rolling 5 skill dice from the start in combat (against monsters)?

I know from the text that NPCs can push rolls, but what about monsters? If they can't then it doesn't matter what dice you roll for them, as long as you have the correct total number.

Is this something definitely won't change? It would be good to have a definitive answer on that because if it won't, I'll cancel my second set of dice (they'd just be a novelty) and save myself a little money / buy something else.

Let's not forget that modifiers affect the skill dice pool, which will be needed more often than creatures with high attributes.

Please reconsider this distribution if you can. If not, I too will probably cancel my second set.

I really can't understand why a second set would be useless with the current distribution.

Me neither. We use a lot of dice though. I'll buy whatever is left at release xD

Useless isn't really the right word.

I just don't see one set of dice as fully functional, because it seems to me that 3 skill dice is too few. Talents give bonuses, as does aid and situational modifiers, so I can think of many, if not most, rolls where more than 3 are required.

How often would my players use 4 base dice? Not nearly as often (but still in every game, sure).

So to me the logical dice to get 4 pieces would be the skill dice.

Also, 6 base dice in a double set would be plenty for most situations, whereas 8 seems to be too many, except for rare big monster fights.

Anyway, I've said my piece and won't labour the point further.

So, just to be clear, is that an official 'No, we're not changing it'? Not interested in prolonging the debate, but it matters in terms of the add-ons that I'll buy.
