Dwarven Arcitecture and Stonesinging

Fri 08 Feb 2019, 17:14

Hi Guys,

Do you think the dwarfs use stonesinging when creating their cities and fortifications within the mountains or would this be considered a "shortcut" since they put so much honor into good craftsmanship and that stonesinging is more a religious practice to keep building ont the world?

I of course know that i can do what i want but i was wonderhing what kind of thoughts you had regarding this.

Im construction a dwarven tomb adventure site of a famous dwarven stonesinger with a dark secret.

Best Regards
Hoflin

In my mind it would be a shortcut since all magic, even druidic magic, comes with a risk of going horribly wrong and it's limited by WP.

Perhaps stone engineering and stonesinging are two very hard practices to learn, so that few have the capacity and talent to master both? A butcher may be very good with a knife, but that doesn't make her a surgeon (well, in Ravenland I suppose it might do just that ;-) ). This way builders and stonesingers would be two separate expertises taking advise from each other for particular problems. A few very capable individuals would be good with both, highly praised and prized. From my own experience I compare these to patent attorneys being good with both technical and legal matters or technical sales people mastering both system engineering and business issues.

Of course if Dwarf uses magic when no PCs are present it doesn't cost any WP or cause a mishap.

Where does it say that?

It doesn't explicitly say that but it does say that NPCs affecting NPCs don't need to roll to see what happens, the GM just decides.  I just extrapolated from that and the fact that as a GM I would not roll any dice for a dwarf up in Stonegarden if the PCs are 100 miles away.

Also, an experienced magic user can reduce the chances of a mishap to 0 anyway, with ingredients, safe casting, and a grimoire and only spend 1 WP to power the spell.
