Druids and the Maha-signs

Mon 14 Jan 2019, 11:27

I was wondering how common the knowledge are about the Maha-signs are among the druids?

Is it only certain druids (like the one in Pelagia) that have knowledge about it or is it a common knowledge among most of the druids? The question arises for me since one of my players are a half-elf druid so it feels like he could have knowledge about the signs since it seems to be a common knowledge among druids when you read the Gamemasters guide.

That of course have some implications in Pelagia, but since I also want to use the signs in more places it could be quite important. So it would be intersting to hear what Brior and other users thinks about the knowledge of Maha-signs.

My original intention was that the Maha language should be commonly known by druids and in deed that they should be able to cast slow spells by formulating and writing what they wanted in the language (this was before there were any rules around). I wrote a short separate chapter on this. In Pelagia, a player druid would have been included in the taboo of druids helping solve the cipher to retrieve the gift from the sea, and would be informed of this by the local druids. Since the cipher is bogus in the first place there wouldn't be any godly punishment if they did so anyway. You can still do this with your druid.

The original Maha language was more complex requiring the players to also solve the very syntax of the language to be able to form expressions. I tried this out on a bunch of you, looking for an experience similar to what actual researchers meet when they encounter an ancient and unknown language. I pictured that Maha could be expanded on by players and game masters over time, perhaps becoming an interest of it's own. There wasn't room in the final product though, so the Maha language was simplified and confined to the Pelagia adventure site.

Is there a GMs version of the maya tiles with the corresponding words, so that I don't have to hunt back through the chapter to confirm if the players have got the answers right?

I absolutely LOVED solving your Maha cipher. It was quite complex, but not impossibly so. I really hope you can expand on it in the future.

I would also love this.  If either you already have one or someone can put one together out of the books references just so we have it all and can maybe fiddle with it in other ways.
Honestly also if you could get permission I would love for you to drop an Appendix online with all of the extra content you wrote that couldn't get included in the campaign book. :)

There is only references in the text I think, and some of the signs in the player handout don't seem to have any references in the text. However, since I will try to expand the number of signs thats fine since I then can use them for certains words.

I was hoping that Eric might be able to provide a GM key for us to use...?

Seconded! If nothing else it would be really great to have some more meaty info on the languages!

I would still want to see that in a future book or online supplement. :)
