Mapping locations on the map

Mon 10 Sep 2018, 05:58

Yes I am aware that locations can be 'anywhere'. But if you GM like I do, you probably want to have major locations mapped out ahead of time (or at least have known options that make sense).

Starting this thread to map locations somewhat logically, based on provided information:

This first entry is based on history presented in the GM guide:.

Year
500: Ailanders enter Ravenland told to stay south of the Seyster and Elya. This is important for the location Glethra (see Year 690)
610: Gold discovered in the river Wash, which feeds into Lake Claye U27 (Lake Claye on the map is called Clay's Eye in the History)
612: Falender marked on the map at location Ad23
690: Gold found in Glethra Mines in the Thynde Range. The Thynde Range runs up the entire Western side (at least, that makes sense to me). Dwarves from Stonegarden fight the humans who mine the Glethra mines because they are in lands that are forbidden to humans (north of the Seyster). So Glethra makes sense to be the mine at D12, which makes E8 or K5 logical locations for Stonegarden.
800: Teramalda founds Alderstone I40
820: Teramalda marches on Lumra with its blood red streams (Lumra is called the Stoneloom mines in Ravens Purge beta - said to be in a mountainside). In 852 Martea flees towards Wailer's Hold but has to divert to Lumra so it needs to be near Wailer's Hold. The castle at P26 could be Lumra and that makes the mine at O28 in the Arina Forest look like a good choice for the Lumra mines or Stoneloom mines.
869- 874: Zygofer's troops conquer and destroy the elven city of Varassa (N19) said to be in the Arina Forest but the map has it in Feulenmark.
877: Therania tires of king Algarod's reanimated corpse and sends him to command the fortress at Weatherstone. Assuming the undead don't travel far, Weatherstone should be in the west. The fortress by Blaudwater looks good but since Zygofer only sensed Merigall in Blaudwater when he moved into Alderstone - it seems unlikely. The castles at I31 or at P47 seem like the best options.
880: Zertorme has withdrawn to a place by the ocean. Zertorme is in Amber's Peak (Raven Purge beta) - a ruined fortress on the plain. "The Plain" is Margelda plain. Location Ab20 appears to be the only map location that fits.

I was wondering if Varassa is now he Eye of the Rose adventure site as it fits that it was an elven city within Orc territory, there just isn't a cliff?

Also, we don't have much information on this important village -

The church’s leader has been based in the village of Farhaven since the city of Falender was burned to the ground during the wars. Aspis nurtures a dream of rebuilding Falender and the serpent
temple there. The Congregation of the Serpent is very important culturally, because they keep a large library in Farhaven. (GM Guide pg 37).

Farhaven could be the village on the south coast of Anger Bay in the area called Margelda). The other village on Margelda is where I have placed Pelagia (Backwater Bay).

I was looking at Pelagia as being over that side of the map.

I would be interested in hearing how people have placed adventure sites.

I asked he players where they wanted to start and where to place the Hollows, obviously near a river. I then gave hints about Weatherstone and gave directions to that site. The next site they hear about will be the Vale of the Dead buy I was going to let them.choose a location for it on the map.

I plan to place the sites like this:

The Hollows
Aa36, Ab27 or Ag38
In the description of the site it says that goblins live in the close by forest. I want to place The Hollows close to The Shroud and/or Fangwoods as these are the only forests where goblins are placed on the kin map. I know that goblins may live in other forests as well, and that I can place them anywhere I want, but I like to over-interpret the material. If I would let go of the kin map I would probably place it in T37. After The Spire of Quetzel was released I may want to place The Hexenwald in Aa36 and Ab27 seems to be more of a coastal village than The Hollows, so today my first choice is probably Ag38.

Weatherstone
P37
I wanted it to be close to Harga, as this is where the fourth alder wars were fought. blueman01 seems to disagree. Please explain why this location is unlikely.

Vale of the Dead
Ag6 or Af3
I have a romantic thought that Martea took Zygofer to her old home in Vivend on their honey moon and that the Vale of the Dead therefore could be close to that area. It seems a bit unlikely to find whiners there, though.

Grindbone
Q14
I want it to be close to the Urhur orcs, as there is a connection.

Ravenhole
F15 or C24
The ogres hang out in Harmsmoor.

It would be great to have some more detail about Farhaven as it seems pretty important if it's big enough to have a library.

"Weatherstone P37  I wanted it to be close to Harga, as this is where the fourth alder wars were fought. blueman01 seems to disagree. Please explain why this location is unlikely."

No I completely agree that it needs to be close to Harga. In 874 we know that Zygofer got pushed back to Alderstone where King Algarod was captured, killed and raised from the dead.
So I agree that it is near Alderstone, in Harga in one of the three castles. We know that Zygofer lived in Weatherstone for some time, performing his experiments (see the Weatherstone adventure site for details). After living in Weatherstone, he moved to Alderstone. The reason that I don't think P37 works, is that we also know that at some point (no date given) Merigall is captured by the elves and dissolved in acid and poured into Lake Harga - which then became called Blaudwater.

If Zygofer was living in P37 at that time he should have sensed Merigall in the water. But we are told that "When Zygofer much later made his seat in Alderstone, he sensed the demonic being in the lake and was able to reshape Merigall through sorcery." So, if he moved from Weatherstone to Alderstone and only sensed the demon when in Alderstone, I'm making the connection that Alderstone must be closer to Blaudwater than Weatherstone. Which is why I suggest that Weatherstone needs to be one of the other two castles in the Harga area.

Anyway, that's why I'm currently putting Weatherstone as P47.

I think Farhaven is one of the hardest villages to place on the map. The only real clue we have is that it should be near 'Falender'.
But I don't want to put it in Margelda or Moldena as that is the heart of Ailander country. I've decided to put them in Vivend on the Elya River in
the village located at Z16. I plan to make Farhaven somewhat fortified as anyone living there could be constantly fighting the Saurians.

The Adventure sites:
Weatherstone: (P47)

The Hollows: (Ab27). An Ailander settlement near the Harga plains with Goblins nearby - with a river and rocky terrain. Ab27 seems to check all of the boxes.

The Vale of the Dead: (G32). A dungeon site in a mountainous region that Zygofer could have visited frequently with Martea (so should be close to Alderstone). G32 works well with the white mist hiding the vale itself.

Grindbone: (Q14,Q18,T33) built during the Alder Wars so near Harga (also, buying swinehounds from the Rust Brothers so Southwest).
"The village of slavers and thieves that lies beyond the forest." Needs to be near water. Should be near the Urhur Clan. I'm leaning towards T33 though it is not perfect.

Ravenhole: (F15, C24) One of the two Ogre villages

Amber's Peak: (Ab20) A ruined fortress on the plain. "The Plain" is Margelda plain. Location Ab20 appears to be the only map location that fits.

Eye of the Rose: I like Lupex's idea that this is built from the ruins of Varassa.

Pelagia: The storm temple on the island of Maidenholm in Anger Bay.

Stonegarden: (E8, K5)

The Stoneloom Mines: aka the Lumra Mines O28 with Lumra being P26

Haggler's House: I32 Listed as a Castle location in Harga. "The goddess Heme’s greatest temple in the Forbidden Lands". The castle
on the map at I32 is shaped like a big house - so that's pretty much perfect. In truth, I'm likely to use the village located nearest Alderstone instead of a castle
for Haggler's House. I want it to be close to Alderstone/Vond for game play reasons.

Vond E38

The Spire of Quetzel: I am going to make it be the Castle in the middle of Lake Varda. But that's because I know my game group are going to want to investigate the castle in the middle of the lake
because it is one of the coolest castle locations on the map. There are lots of other possibilities for this one.

The Bright Vault: A white structure in the 'dull red rock of the wastes'. A dungeon in Harga. There are lots to choose from in the Harga plains area.
I like the one at the bottom of the Groveland Woods (S48) due to its isolation.

The Hexenwald: (Ab35) Village - Though the Hexenwald probably shouldn't be a village, it needs to be near a village . In a wooded area with a pond. An interesting location could be near the village where the Groveland, Shroud and Fangwoods all meet. The village at AB35 could be a Goblin village. The dead that Emmaline is raising could be undead goblins. Which could be fun to play out.

Graveyard of Thunder: The dungeon on the island in Anger Bay is the only Saurian dungeon.
