Languages?

Sun 03 Jun 2018, 18:35

Are there distinct languages in the world? I've not seen mention of them anywhere in either book yet.

My two halfling players talk Danish (we are all Swedes) when they switch to their secret halfling language :D

If I have understood it correctly, all the playable kins talk the same language (they have lived with/near each other for a very long time), even though the orc language can be harder to understand because of pronunciation issues. I can imagine that there are different dialects in each region. Not so much so you can't understand each other, but enough to invoke the -1 to manipulation because of sine difficulties to understand each other (I will probably use the -1 for everyone to when it comes to orcs). There are other languages (mentioned in the GM book) but those will probably fall under the Lore skill to understand.

I am thinking about a houserule which gives the players access to different languages via lore.

You start with one language, every point in lore learns you another one.

In my vision, i would make two main languages, oldspeak and alderish.

Alderish is the language of the alderlanders, oldspeak the common tongue of dwarfs, elfs, elvenkind, orcs and ailanders.
As additional minor languages, i would make:

Belifar (goblins and halflings)
Dwarvish (old language, mostly used by stonesingers)
Elfish (Old elvish, used by runemages)
Maha (secret, raven and clay druids)
Wolfish (called howling, wolfskin language)
Aslene
Dark tongue (demons and blood mages)
and languages for lizardmen, whiners and ogers.

What do you think.

I like it! I might rename some of them, but it's a great solution for those who want to add the detail to their games. It also makes Lore more useful to everyone, which is a good side effect!
I make YZE games (https://drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matt%20Kay) and produce predominately Free League content on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@3skulls)

Excellent suggestion, Arnold! I will use this in my games.
