Re: Bringing the party together

Had the same question from my group (I'm starting a playtest this week). They have a Dwarf, Orc, Goblin and Wolfkin in the party and were genuinely puzzled how on earth they could all be in a group, when the wording in the PHB is basically explaining how all the kin hate each other...

After some thought, I proposed the following:
You are all exiled from your own people due to some crime or infraction, and have been living rough among the humans and elves (who look down on you) for some time. You've all had enough and are now eager to make your mark in the Ravenlands.
It's not super-original, but it was enough for them.

My intention is to agree how they got together during chargen, so we can start en media res out in the Ravenlands. No meeting by chance in a tavern or in a caravan for me, thanks very much!

As PCs are very unusual characters they can easily break conventions - don’t have to be the bigots and maniacs other of the race tends to be. Therefore an orc could travel with an elf, dwarf and human without killing each other. Ok, the rest of the world will tend to be a little bit suspicious of such a group ;)

I have to agree that the idea of a shared debt, common goal or web of relationships would be very appreciated

We're now working on a random tables for how each adventurer met the group, one table for each profession or kin, to be included in the Adventurers and Legends booklet. Each adventurer except one rolls on the table, creating a short narrative of how the group got together.

That sounds really good. Will there be any guidance on how far each adventurer May have traveled or where they lived before the blood mist lifted?

That's surely quite easy to come up with, in conjunction with the new tables?

It should be but I will need to develop 4 villages, one for each player and work out the route they travelled through to get to the hollows to start the campaign. I will attempt to put the hollows in a location central to where each player starts their characters life.

What about having all of their home villages destroyed by one malicious force or other and then having your players make history up when the need arises? Previous games from the Free League has put a lot of the responsibility of the players' history on the players, not the GM. Playing shouldn't be a second job for the GM, the players have to carry their load ;)

We had our first game sessions on saturday and i resolved the grouping issue with following idea. Players rolled their characters using the tables in Legends and Adventurers, i let them choose kin, profession and profession path, and everyone rolled on How did you meet?-table. They themselves chose two players (since they made brothers) and then we went clockwise round the players and players made the story of how they became a group and why. And it was during that when the group was formed, i hinted about making the base relationships among the players. It kinda forced the players to take responsibility with their group's forming and the story played out nicely
