Re: One-on-one/duet campaign

If yes, I would probably see if I can get some other players to join the game, as that is a key part of the whole experience.
It doesn't have to be a key part of it. One-on-one roleplaying can be amazingly fun for beginners and veterans alike.
Agreed, and I have run many single player sessions in the past, but the group dynamic is part of the social aspect of most roleplaying games and it would be a shame if she didn't get to experience the full spectrum of the role play experience.
To get the full spectrum, one would have to play DnD, Apocalypse world, Lady Blackbird, Rune Quest all at once, with both dice and freeform at the same time =D
One on one is as good a place to start as any. And depending on circumstance might even be the optimal choice.

It depends on the type of game you want to play. Forbidden Lands is not really made for a skill use heavy type of game; its aesthetic is old school hex crawling the wilderness & combat. You could certainly set a game in a city or town where your wife plays a character like a Rogue and gets into all kinds of adventures; but again the limited amount of skills and their use in the game will start to drag. As combat is deadly and she is just 1 PC you won't be able to do much of that either; even a run in with the town guard will be extremely risky if you let the dice fall where they may.

You certainly CAN do it, but other games will do it better; I recommend The Dark Eye RPG (fifth edition), or even D&D 5e (this allows for more robust characters if you start her out at a higher level), or even Pathfinder.
She wants the wilderness exploring, combat and resource management, so I think it is a good game for her.
All three of those games are too 'crunchy' for me. Forbidden Lands is as complicated as I want to GM these days.

9littlebees: I agree with everything you wrote!

Lupex: I was not suggesting completely rewriting the rules. I was asking for advice about one rule change.

We game every two weeks with some friends, so she does experience group gaming. One-on-one gaming can be very satisfying. For interesting articles about their benefits and reasons for why some small changes to the rules may be necessary see here and here

Sorry Tom, there just seemed to be lots of suggestions coming through about changing many of the rules, which felt like some of the experience would have been lost.

And I wasn't sure if this was her first game or not, as it's not then she already knows how to play rpgs, so a single player game should work well.

At the end of the day change any rule that makes it more fun for both GM and player, and have fun.

Personally I would keep successes to a six only as that keeps the tension at the table but I would totally give her some starting xp to spend on talents or skills to even the odds and some extra coin for better starting gear.

Thank you, Lupex. Yes, I agree for a game with multiple players successes should only be on sixes. I have given her some more skill points to start with and we will see how the game runs like that.

How about instead of having five be a success, allow her to spend willpower points to buy a success?

Or have fives be a partial success?

Or carry over additional success to the next roll?

I don’t think a five as a partial success would work, but buying successes with WP is a good idea.
