The problem is not a historical usage of the sling. It's a matter of game recourse economy. And the sling totally breaks that economy.

I would just house rule in a resource die for stones and be done with it, until we get an official errata or comment from the devs.

Yes that's what we did. But I had to have a loooong discussion with the player who uses the sling - since this is to his disadvantage. What ever happened to rule 0...

On a somewhat related note, what would you say is the advantage to using a ranged weapon (that requires ammo) over a melee weapon that doesn't? Is the only real advantage that you are out of range of enemy swings (in theory)? Combat seems designed to be pretty melee-centric. As a ranged character, I haven't noticed a good trade-off yet for the risk of running out of arrows.

Sit in a tree, fire at people on the ground.
Stand on a wall, fire att people on the ground.
See people running towards you, shoot before they get close.
Hunt animals.

To start the combat with a crossbow can really make your day. Yes, you have to draw a melee weapon after that shot, but a crossbow really hurts.

Well I guess you could make the sling owner “forage” for suitable stones. Each success getting him a step on the resource die

I second, or third, a sling resource die that can be foraged. You can't always find a suitable stone on hand.

Additionally, you could require a slow action to prepare a sling representing the time it takes to load the stone and wind the sling up to speed before launching it. Fast shooter would reduce it to a fast action instead.
