Village Kin

Sun 10 Jun 2018, 10:27

There isn’t any way in the adventure site creation guidelines for villages to randomly determine which Kin is more prevalent, or to work out the Kin ratio in a particular village. Something about this should probably be added as it will be an important aspect of any village the PCs encounter.

+1.

I also miss a little bit some kind of world guide to the forbidden lands.
Where do the orc tribes settle, where are the dwarfen clansmen, where live the elves, ... ?
Are there major settlemens and where can i find them? How many people live in this villages/ cities?

We have a map, we have the gamesmasters book with history, different gods and the description of the kins, but there is still a lot missing.

I was thinking about this when contemplating where to start the campaign as each player will want to know where their kin heartlands are and where they lived prior to deciding to seek fame and fortune. It does feel a little bit like the world may be a bit too undescribed from a gm perspective.

This is intentional due to the hexagon map flexibility with stickers. The first map I drew of Ravenland was more defined, but it was then made more fluid on purpose. I suppose one could publish a ”suggested” map – sort of ”editors cut” – but the main map that comes with the game should be flexible.

Perhaps we could join forces here and build the forbidden lands unofficially here in a post like "lets fill the map" ... .

Does this mean dwarves, orcs, elves and goblins can be encountered in equal measure across all of the forbidden lands or will there be areas where a village is most likely to be mainly inhabited by orcs, and other areas where a village is more likely inhabited by halflings etc?

Since dwarves and elves were the dominating kins before the Shift, the wars and the Blood Mist, I'd guess that they have pretty permanent, and old, settlements in the Forbidden Land (Ravenland-That-Was). Orcs, halflings and goblins on the other hand came to be as events unfolded. The orcs were given as slaves to the dwarves and elves by the Raven god and became free only after the wars. Halflings and goblins were once something else and was given new shape after defying the gods during the Shift, so they are also, kind of, new.

I think the point of the "floating" geography of the Forbidden Lands is to let you create YOUR Forbidden Lands.

Then we definitely more guidance on how we can piece it all together, and how to populate the villages depending on our view of the forbidden lands because, as the game is meant to be low prep I don’t really want to have to do all of this thinking ,about which kin is in each village, without some help. Otherwise I am left having to map my own ecosystem, whereas the background is deep enough that maybe a template could be used to help me to map all of this.

To be perfectly honest although I have been gaming for 30 odd years, I have never run a hex crawl and actually have little interest or time to develop the whole thing myself, which is why I was initially drawn to the forbidden lands in the first place. It gave me an open-ish map region but with enough background material and guidance for me to make it work. I am not saying that I couldn’t work it out by myself to make ‘my forbidden lands’ but that will add to my prep time before my first game, especially as I know my players will ask where their kin can be found, and where did their characters originate from. At the moment I will struggle to immediately answer that for them.

I have to agree. Some official guidance (in the form of "take it or leave it") would be greatly appreciated.

I talked to FL about this and will do a sketch on Ravenland, roughly placing kins and probably clans in their core lands (that overlap). A map with this will probably be included in the game. That map will of course be for guidance only for those who so wish, not the ultimate truth. We also discussed suggesting places for adventure sites, but FL thinks it better to leave that undefined, which I can appreciate.
