Talent Effects

Thu 17 May 2018, 17:13

I am really liking the variety and utility of the rewritten tiered talents, they are much more interesting than the previous +1, +2, +3 approach.

Unfortunately the attempt to limit that multiple effects from the same talent don’t stack (pg 61) has led to some slight confusion as it would make sense for many of the effects from talents to actually stack, especially if the player has spent the xp to buy all of the tiers.

For example - MASTER OF THE HUNT, it would seem appropriate for all of the effects to work together improving the benefit of hunting by adding a +1 modifier, counting hunting as resting and rolling two D6s on the animal roll.

Or - SWORD FIGHTER, it would be really useful to be able to use the two effects of slashing two enemies and have the D8 Artifact Die added to the pool (maybe add a note to say the D8 replaces the +1 modification, if this is the case?)

For clarity, can you confirm that the intention would be for the player to choose which single effect from the three that she would want in play during a hunt action.

Or could the player activate all of the effects simultaneously?

If it is the former, how about adding a rule that if you have multiple tiers of a talent you can spend 1 WP to activate an additional effect from the talent, so characters can make the most of the xp they have spent.

You could see the hunter either focus on hunting, hunting whatever he can get. This will earn him +1  to the roll to see if he succeed (Rank 1) or
... he focus on himself and really taking it slow and enjoying nature and everything. He will have a wonderful time hunting and it will counts as resting (Rank 2) or
... he focus to hunt down that animal, the big one, skipping everything else. He will roll two d6s to see what animal he will hunt today (Rank 3).

Well, I have no problem that a hunter have to select Rank to use. The hunter select hunting method/style depending on situation. Sometimes you can afford having less chance of success just to get the big animal (Rank 3). Other times you basically hunt to relax (Rank 2) or hunt the first animal that comes by (Rank 1).

But wouldn’t it be nice to give players the option of spending WP to activate multiple effects? This would also help with the flow of WP for non-magic user characters?

My players that have been playing non-magic characters don't need any help with the flow of WP, they spend their WP on their WP-talents just fine (I have started to hate halflings, it is so damn hard to hit them ).
