CREATURE: Troglodyte

Tue 20 Feb 2018, 19:49

Another creature, this time the filthy trog...

Troglodyte

Troglodytes are a species of vile lizardfolk that dwell in dark places such as caverns and swamps and infest the tunnels of dwarven holds. They are squat, powerfully built reptilian creatures, with dark scales and fleshy crests that run from the tops of their heads and around their jaws. They possess sharp claws on both their feet and hands, and a thick, stubby tail. They communicate verbally with hisses and grunts but also by scent, which is packed with pheromones, telling nearby troglodytes far more than anything their spoken language could. They coat themselves in this slime to keep their skin moist and to ensure that they are recognised by others in their tribe. Unfortunately for all non-troglodytes, their scent stinks to the point that a cavern full of troglodytes would make a human or elf physically sick.

Troglodytes usually live in small tribes or clans with their territorial grounds centred on an underground nest, where they are ruled by a tribal chief and its brood queen. With their entire existence being dominated by an endless hunt for food and the need to reproduce, the tribe is constantly driven to provide more food for the queen and her ever hungry brood of hatchling trogs. The breeding queen is a huge, immobile, bloated creature, almost continually laying leathery eggs into a stinking pool of troglodyte slime. The stench in such a place is almost solid and any unfortunate outside that makes it this far into a trog lair, is likely to be overcome by the horrific miasma that hangs in the air.

They are not smart enough to craft anything themselves and prize metal tools and weapons above all else. Fights often erupt over who claims a fallen foe’s sword or axe, though as in most similar societies, the largest, strongest troglodyte (usually the chief) gets the largest, most fearsome looking weapon. Strangely though, no interest is paid to armour, shields or indeed coin.

Troglodytes regularly send hunting parties out during the night, sending them as far as they can to steal food or capture live prey, with the only restriction being that they need to return to their dark holes before daybreak. Their lair usually has an escape route, leading either deeper underground or out into a swamp or some other dank place on the surface. Troglodytes caught out in the sunlight are vulnerable as their eyes are adapted to see in the total darkness of the caverns and tunnels of their subterranean homes and are practically blinded by even the weakest daylight.
