Weapon Talents Boring

Mon 29 Jan 2018, 00:50

There are a number of weapon talents that all do the same thing. Add a dice per tier. Not only does this mean that there are loads of talents for essentially the same thing but it is very dull. I'd like to see talents diversify weapons even more. Maybe you unlock special stunts to be used with specific weapons. Or better versions of stunts that already exist. Heavy weapons get a knockdown amd extra damage combined into one. Daggers can maybe trigger a flurry of blows. Axes leave people bleeding or something. What do people think.

The idea behind those talents seems to be to let PC progress a little faster with a specific weapon type (3 XP per rank) than to progress with all weapon types (5 XP per rank). Choosing the talent automatically gives the PC a bit of style as the player will now prefer to use that specific type of weapon.

I just thinkmyou could do so much more with it. For instace the swimg weapon action gives a +1 damage with two handed weapons if you don't move. That to me feels like it could be a really cool talent. Its powerful enough.

I remember we had this discussion before... I will use RAW and then after playing the game will decide if the talents as written aren’t enough. The general talents with the addition of dice is more a kind of specialisation and I think roleplaying wise it’s nice to focus on a weapon an become a Swordmaster. And don’t forget that the weapons have traits that allow you the use of some actions that you normally can’t use.

Hello!

We are looking at ways of making talents like this a little more colorful. That said, the combat system already contains a wealth of different moves and combinations available to all combatants. For example, the suggestion you made (swing weapon action gives a +1 damage with two handed weapons if you don't move) is already available to everyone. We dont't want to lock all of the cool moves behind "talentwalls". :)

Yes I knew it was an action :) , I was suggesting it could be a talent, just as an example of the kind of thing i'd like to see. I guess personally, oddly enough, I lean more towards actually locking things away behind talents. I like the idea of you getting more out of your talent beyond a plus one. When i'm leveling up my character I want to be looking forward to some great new ability, just another +1 one on the roll seems anti climatic. I understand it is good to have ways to specialise in a certain weapon but I would like that to unlock new ways in which to fight. I also totally get what your saying about having access to cool stuff early on, which is great, but I do like the idea of being able to create high level enemies and players with new abilities that basic level people won't have.

I think things like Fient or special moves are actually good fodder for combat talents, kinda like old school video game combos, such as a parry leading to a counterattack or a dodge resulting in a roll that gets you back on your feet etc or some of the more fun end game moves.  Maybe things that can be used once per session but have some really fun effects (although at the moment i can't articulate any!)?

I'd agree with both these posts and I'm delighted to see some of the sorts of things I'd advocated previously (e.g. sneak peak at combo cards) covered in the profession talents already. I do think the 'dice-inflation' talents are a bit 'meh' in general, even the ones that apply to non-combat skills, especially when there are relatively few benefits (outside combat) to multiple successes. For instance, Chef sounds quite interesting, Builder doesn't. Herbalist is a bit vanilla, maybe beyond a boosted Survival skill, it could unlock an option for crafting potions or tonics or something like that - I could see my Peddler as a bona-fide snake-oil salesman!

Yeah comboing powers would be really cool. Knife fighter gets extra damage against a downed enemy. Maybe he can fient as a fast action because he is wielding a weaker weapon. Maybe unarmed fighter can have a free shove attempt after a succesful attack. I also quite like onnce per day powers or just new ways to use willpower. Level 3 talents could unlock willpower abilities. Axe fighter can make people bleed. Also there is no mace fighter? There are alresdy talents that neuter armour but I tbink it would have been cool if blunt weapon talents broke armour more. Also there is no bodyguard talent like in mutsnt year zero. I would appriciate one.

I agree about the other talents as well beimg a bit dull. Maybe the other chapters will show how extra success can be used but i'd like to see mahbe speed increase on travel available to te sailor. Or stealthy movement. That sort of stuff

Yes, I'd noticed blunt weapons weren't getting any love in the talent list - I predict a lot of very unhappy hammer-wielding Dwarves
