"The Mist", a movie based on the Stephen King novel, could serve as inspiration, too.

I love the movie references for all the kids movies like Super 8 and Stand by Me but don't forget that Alien came out in May 1979. So some alien like material might be fine as well.

I remember watching Mad Max: The Road Warrior with some friends from my class in school. It was probably around 1985, we were 12-13 years old at the time. As you may remember, there is a scene where I guy gets his head smashed by a boomerang. When we – a bunch of small town nerds – were watching this, my mother suddenly entered the room. She was very upset and turned off the video – the scene was way too much for us, she said. Of course, I saw the entire movie later. I think this childhood scene illustrates the 80´s atmosphere quite well: video paranoia that just caused more interest.

And if you want to get into the mood, depending on how far you want to take it, Half Life 2 has a great euro feel with high-otherworldly-tech.

I would say both Half-Life and Half-Life 2 can serve as inspiration. The setting for the first game, Black Mesa, is in the US, while City 17 is located in eastern Europe, near the Baltic Sea (Latvia?).

There's a show on Syfy here in the States called Channel Zero that gets a lot of influence from Creepypasta stories (first season is regarding Candle Cove and takes place partly in the 80s). This show, and Creepypasta stories in general, might be good inspiration for Mysteries, too.

I would also recommend you watch "The OA" on Netflix.

Trivia: the movie "Let the Right One In" is set in Blackeberg, a suburb halfway between the Loop and Stockholm.
