What about Super 8. Replace the alien with something terrestrial. Was that set around the 80's?

I haven't seen anyone mention Explorers yet, I think that could be a fair reference. It's American, released in 1985, and follows some kids who, with the help of a prophetic dream, build a spaceship to meet aliens.

More a general reference, but when I first saw Simon's work I had a massive flashback to endlessly reading the 1979 "Usborne Book of the Future" as a kid in the 80's.

A minimum of searching will no doubt bring up a scanned PDF somewhere.

If you want to get kinda weird.. the anime FLCL is a fabu coming of age story about a 12 year old boy, a manic rocker girl with mad bass skills, and giant robots sprouting out of a portal in the boy's head, and a mysterious ultra company called Medical Mechanical. Very fast paced, great sense of humor with the right amount of danger, and an incredible soundtrack by the band the Pillows.

I'm writing an article on life as a t(w)een in 1980's Sweden. As I was 16 years old in 1981, I have pretty clear recollections on how it was. I'm still awaiting a reply from Fria Ligan whether there's an interest in the article from their side, or enough background info is included in the core rulebook.

One of the conclusions one can draw from the books and the alternate game settings as suggested by the kickstarter stretch goal, is that the Loop mostly caused local phenomena, at least in the 1980's (things going haywire in the 90's is another story). Thus, I think basing society and history (like politics, culture, fashions, other tech, the world in general, etc) on the real 1980's is the best way to go. I cannot remember any particular Swedish books or movies from that period that would tie or inspire adventures in with the Loop setting, but the old Soviet movie "Stalker" might provide some inspiration. It's ages since I watched it, though.
Wasn't there a video game that was based loosely on this?
Actually 3 games.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

and here's some Let's play for all 3 games so you can experience it
without actually having to play it:

Rad ? I was wondering if it could be used as inspiration for Tales From The Loop. I don't know. It could be too much ;)

"Tremors" (1990; Swedish title: "Hotet från underjorden") is good inspiration for a US setting.
My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land.
