D.A.R.Y.L, Short Circuit, Goonies, Explorers, My Science Project are all on my viewing list if and when I manage to convince my group to give this game a try,

So, this topic is old and it's been awhile since I posted, but in a fit of nostalgia, I watched a lot of movies I enjoyed from my childhood... and came across The Iron Giant. This movie is technically set in the 50s, but the premise still works really well for TftL. Imagine it.. a group of kids find a giant robot that is basically a big kid itself. They have to keep it hidden from parents and other authority figures... except maybe the one outcast adult that runs the junkyard. The main antagonist could be, like in the movie, a government person sent out to investigate the strange happenings.

Oh, excellent. Great choice. I think it's on Netflix right now, too.

Oh yes, that should be an excellent source of inspiration :)
I GM:d another GM and his regular group yesterday (who had just started up their TFTL-campaign) and afterwards we started chatting about this:
* How the core of the game is mystery and relationships. The drama of different lives — needs and wants, clashing or aligning.
* And how, even though he and his group never experienced the 80s, they could (due to the above) still resonate so well with what the game really is about.

The concept of being a kid, trying to make sense of a world you're not quite partaking fully in yet — that's universal, and spans all eras.

Yeah, that's where I watched it. There's a lot of good movies on there right now, so I spent my days off getting nostalgic.

I'm writing an article on life as a t(w)een in 1980's Sweden. As I was 16 years old in 1981, I have pretty clear recollections on how it was. I'm still awaiting a reply from Fria Ligan whether there's an interest in the article from their side, or enough background info is included in the core rulebook.

One of the conclusions one can draw from the books and the alternate game settings as suggested by the kickstarter stretch goal, is that the Loop mostly caused local phenomena, at least in the 1980's (things going haywire in the 90's is another story). Thus, I think basing society and history (like politics, culture, fashions, other tech, the world in general, etc) on the real 1980's is the best way to go. I cannot remember any particular Swedish books or movies from that period that would tie or inspire adventures in with the Loop setting, but the old Soviet movie "Stalker" might provide some inspiration. It's ages since I watched it, though.
Wasn't there a video game that was based loosely on this?
