Creating a "mix tape" was one of the first things that I started to think about when I heard about this game!

I'm a big fan of 80s retro synth music - there are many great artists producing this type of instrumental music that would be ideal for a game such as this. I would recommend the work of College, who is one of the pioneers of the genre, but also has a very minimalist sound, very well suited to a background sound track or ambience. You may remember his track "A Real Hero" from the movie "Drive"?

The guys who composed the Stranger Things sound track also release similar music under the name S U R V I V E that is worth checking out.

Also the UK duo Futurecop released a few EPs and albums that were heavily inspired by 80s cartoons and fantasy films.

With a look to those lyrics, this song could give us inspiration for the game : Alphaville - Forever Young

Been listening to a lot of Carpenter Brut lately and his music might fit. It's kind of a throwback to the 80s synth era.

Mixmag Magazine just posted a great playlist that would be an awesome soundtrack for TtfL.

After reading suggestions here, doing some digging through billboard charts, and adding in some personal preferences I put together a tailored playlist for my first gameplay session:

https://open.spotify.com/user/shinagani ... UzHpOzrVKz

It's got a good amount of pop songs from the era, most of them from 1980-1987. And they're padded out with instrumental synthwave (including tracks from SURVIVE), and some of John Carpenter's 'Lost Themes', so that players aren't constantly distracted by lyrics. I thought the playlist really helped the session's atmosphere.

I was going to suggest the New Retrowave stuff but I can see that lots of people have beaten me to it. So as an altenative may I recommend a cd called "80's Remixed & Extended" out on Sony Music. Its got the likes of Luther Vandross, Rick Astley, Men at Work, The Bangles etc, but as they're remixes none of the tunes are quite as people remember them so you get both nostalgia (for those of us ancient enough to remember the 80's) and freshness.

Howdy!

I'm new here, but I threw together this playlist for my TFtL the other day, so I thought  I'd post it here. It's Mainly hits from the mid-late 80's, but I made it a bit more rock oriented, and I also added some some retro-8 bit synth stuff, because it felt relevant, even though it's new stuff.

If people want local music for their settings, I would also like to recomend the app/website http://radiooooo.com/ where you can choose any country and decade and get music from there and then. It is a wonderful, wonderful site!

Cheers,

Need a sound track for this game?
For the 80's that never was, comes the music from the 80's that never was,

Look for anything that's synth wave and retro electro music, on youtube,

I rest my case,

I have a thing for music

As the score for "Stranger Things" was influenced by soundtracks like John Carpenter's music for his movie "Escape From New York" (1981), why not use that?

Here's a classic 80s instrumental band from Japan that I would think would work for setting the mood:
