I assume the guide use a marker on a clear plastic sheet to draw the route on, and then the LM just use that on his map as well?

The writers didn't specify to keep it deliberatly vague. I kept it that way as well when playing, in order for the game to feel a bit "storytelling" & folk tale-like. Roughly 1860ies is it in my mind, but things, news, historical events and phenomena from later in the century can show ...

Kollat in Moderna Väsen? Illustrationer av Reine "Mutant År Noll" Rosenberg. Kanske finns det något inspirerande där även om jag tror det är mer fokus på modernare företeelser än bergtagna.
