Re: Playing TftL with a single player

In this case, the player would be an adult who is new to RPGs but enjoys stories of mystery/investigation. I wanted to use TftL as a gateway drug to RPGs :) Good suggestions, I think giving the PC a friend that helps but is otherwise passive could be good. Or modifying the mystery to make sure most ...

Playing TftL with a single player

Hello!
I'm considering playing Tales from the Loop with a single player. Has anyone tried that before? What do you think are pitfalls to avoid or important things to focus on when you can't rely on interactions between PCs or teamwork?

Re: Bringing the party together

I have to agree that the idea of a shared debt, common goal or web of relationships would be very appreciated

Re: Weatherstone

I think blueman raises some valid points. One thing I didn't appreciate with Weatherstone was how linear it was and how few interesting possibilities for interaction it offered. With the notable exception of when to awaken the dead (the "undead on/undead off" descriptions are great), the a...

Re: Question about stacking initiative and other ones about map stickers

Yeah, I think I'll stick the stickers on small cardboard or plastic chips, and then stick these tokens with sticky paste on the map to be able to reuse them. Plus, it can make some nice 3d props on the map.

Re: Adventure sites

Since the system is built for hexcrawling anyway, I suggest picking up other good hexcrawls and stealing sites and encounters from them. That includes Hot Springs Island (high fantasty), Slumbering Ursine Dunes (weird), a lot of the Lamentations of the Flame Princess product line (good but often exp...

Re: Doubts about manipulation*

Ok, thanks Tomas and everyone else. I think I had trouble understanding that Manipulate isn't meant to talk your way out of violent situations, but if that's the intended design goal it's starting to make sense for me. I'll see how it turns out at the table!

[GM Guide] "Let major NPCs live" : is it bad advice?

I enjoy very much the GM Guide beta, especially all the random tables (I love me some random tables!). However, I was surprised by the advice given on p9 about not letting PCs kill major NPCs easily. Especially "Even if they suffer a mortal wound there's probably someone to heal them nearby&quo...

Re: Doubts about manipulation*

Well, thank you for taking the time to explain. It still doesn't completely click for me, I'm not sure it ever will. Let's break down the "shady shopkeeper with guards" case. Failure : The shopkeeper refuses to sell. The PCs may either leave or fight. Success : The shopkeeper agrees to sel...

Re: Doubts about manipulation*

So the difference is that if you succeed they can punch you and if you fail they can ignore you?
